Miura Out as Shinkansen Manager
Written by Maisake Ito
Wednesday, 17 March 2010 15:06
10/8/2011: Kawaguchi, Japan – The big news out of the Hyakujuu Shinkansen camp today is that manager Takanibu Miura has been fired.  While his departure is not surprising news, it is a move that came sooner than expected.  Sources say that Miura was escorted off property today by security personnel.  Several calls by the Chugoku Shimbun to Miura have not been returned.  General Manager John Leonard has released a statement regarding the firing and the incident that took place this morning.

taknibu miuraseung-hwan chin“Manger Takanibu Miura has been released by the Hyakujuu organization.  We thank him for his time and dedication, but we needed to go another route and certain personnel were not fit for the rebuilding process we are going through.  We need individuals here that can face the challenges and adversity of professional baseball while maintaining their composure.  We are facing a long process to get Hyakujuu back to a winning team.  We don’t want a quick fix to our problem.  We have the resources to get this team to the top and keep it there for many years.  We will shed whatever baggage that is necessary to fine tune the organization.”

Some reports indicate that Miura stormed into Leonard’s office this morning, upset about the downward spiral the team has been going through.  Tempers flared and team security was called to separate the two.  Broken chairs have been seen coming out of the team building and window repair servicemen have been here today.

This year was Takanibu Miura’s first with the organization.  Expectations that the Shinkansen could compete in the Shining Star Group were dashed by the inconsistency of the team and the domination by Shin Seiki Evas and Niihama-shi Ghosts, with Hyakujuu compiling a 10-35 record against the two teams.  As mid-season approached, with the team falling farther out of contention, payroll was slashed and many star players were shipped off for prospects and draft picks.

Pitching coach Seung-hwan Chin has also been dismissed by the team.  He has been replaced by Shotaro Ishikawa of the Ruukii Kyuugi (A) Sentai Mighty Mecha.

Scattershooting while wondering whatever happened to Vida Blue

For a gaijin, Ortíz sure can bash a lotHot sauce: Since signing with Neo-Tokyo on July, 5-time ABSF All-Star Enrique Ortíz has hit 16 homeruns in only 204 at bats, a rate of 1 homerun every 12.75 AB.  That is a better rate than any of the top 20 homerun hitters in the LRS, including Morihiro Nakamura (1 HR every 13.00 AB) and Ton Nakamura (13.95).

Something we said?: Despite posting more wins than any other season since 2007, NeTo finished with their worst attendance since 2008, a drop of 13.4%.

All or nothing: Despite hitting the 5th-highest HR total in the LRS, NeTo is on pace for a.224 team batting average, which would be the worst team BA in league history.

How the greedy have fallen: During the 2010 campaign, 1B Kunicichi Nishiyama, one of the few power threats in the Akira lineup, stood firm in his demand for a 2-year, $12 million extension.  GM Ron Hiscock took a pass and allowed Nishi to test free agency.  He attempted to make the jump stateside to the PEBA, signing a minor league contract with Tempe.  Half a season later, he was released after hitting only .184.  He then returned to the LRS in July, signing a minor league contract… with Neo-Tokyo.  At least he got to travel the world...

Back to school?: Update on the 2010 draft class… Top pick Kata Nakamura lost 10 games in 21 starts since turning pro, although he had a respectable 3.17 ERA… 2nd overall pick Takiji “Eager Beaver” Mitzutani lost his first 8 decisions as a pro, finishing 1-8, but had an impressive 2.26 ERA… 2nd rounder 1B Koto Murakami has struggled at the plate, batting only .145 with 1 HR in 255 AB… fellow 2nd rounder Shinkichi Ohayashi hasn't fared much better, with a .221 BA and 1 HR in 321 AB.  Hopefully there isn't something in the water in Nagano

One day the Devil challenged the Lord to a baseball game.  Smiling, the Lord proclaimed, "You don't have a chance.  I have Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and all the greatest players up here".  "Yes," snickered the Devil, "but I have all the umpires."

German Entrepreneur to Take Over Bulldozers?
Written by Hank Hanson

by Hank Hanson, Yuma Sun

October 4, 2011: Yuma, AZ – It’s been a tough few years for the fans of the national pastime in our fair town.  What are the odds that a foreigner might save the fiery, burning wreck spiraling to the ground that is Yuma Bulldozers baseball?

When the PEBA experiment started in 2007, many observers had their money on Yuma becoming the dominant ballgame town in Arizona, and the weak first season of the Tempe Knights seemed to prove them right.  A few years later, the roles have reversed.  The Knights won 101 games this season, while the ‘Dozers haven’t lost less than a 100 games in their 5-year Rookie Guerera has not allowed the team's history to drag him downhistory.

And now the team is also looking for a new owner after the previous holders threw up their hands in frustration and walked out.  Uncertainty rules in the clubhouse.  1B Carlos Guerera, whose .341 AVG led the team by a huge margin this year, is confident, however.  “We have the town’s support, the players are hungry; now all we need is the financial muscle to grease the machine.”

The machine hall from the HellCraft plant in BlaisdellAn aptly chosen metaphor.  The latest candidate for taking over the team once the offseason kicks off knows something about machines.  Alex Heller hails from Germany, and his trade is machines large and small that he sells across the world under the well-known HellCraft brand name.  One of his plants operates just outside town in Blaisdell, employing 200 people.

But why would a middle-aged German industrialist pour his money into a Major League baseball club?  “The game has always fascinated me”, he explains.  “I grew up in a small town with American soldiers’ kids.  We would play ball in the afternoons.  I kept following this wonderful sport, hoping I could at some point leave my own mark on the game.  And I think the time has come now.”

A bold statement?  Certainly.  Arrogant?  It may seem so at first, but if you sat down with Heller as we did last week for a Schnitzel at Das Bratwurst Haus and Das Bratwurst Haus was the site of a meeting with the potential new Yuma ownertalk baseball, you’ll notice this Teuton knows his sport, and he’s passionate about it.  But why Yuma?

“As you know I have a small plant nearby.  Whenever I was over here and had a chance, I would catch a ballgame.  It’s a shame how the club was treated in the past and how much bad luck they had.  I hope I’m allowed to give the fine townsfolk the great games they deserve.”  He smiles a boyish grin.  “And it would be a way for me to give something back to the community that has supported this part of my corporation so well these past ten years.”

Not all players seem to be happy about the prospect.  Said one infielder who spoke on the condition of anonymity, “An owner who’d be outside the country most of the time?  How will this help us?  On the other hand, we may finally have some quiet around the clubhouse, without an obsessive owner breathing our necks all the time.”

Rumors of relocation have hung over the team for two years now.  Alex Heller will have none of it.  “If at first you don’t succeed, keep trying till you do.  If I become owner of the Bulldozers, I promise not to move the team away from their loyal fans.”  With a smirk, he adds, “And no, Lederhosen won’t become our home uniform.  That’s too Bavarian for a North German like me, anyways.”

NLN: Rodriguez Addresses Ownership Rumors

NLN - The Clear Voice of Aurora, ColoradoNLN: BREAKING NEWS

by Francis Ferry, NLN beat writer

chris_rodriguez1October 8, 2011: Bakersfield, California – The PEBA playoffs are in full swing and the Borealis find themselves up on the Bakersfield Bears 2-0 despite the season-ending (and 2012-ending) shoulder injury to Miguel García, and the missed turn due to the flu of George Thompson.  A strong effort by the bullpen – Artie Tillman in particular – and the Borealis outslugging the Bears sends the teams to Bakersfield for Game 3 while rumors abound the PEBA as reports are cropping up regarding the ownership questions reported earlier here in the Northern Lights NewsESPN is reporting that Chris Rodriguez’s position with the team is closer to 50% ownership, much higher than originally speculated, while FOX News reports the whole mess as a hoax aimed at drawing attention away from the real story in the PEBA – the surprising ascent of the Tempe Knights.

It is no secret that Rodriguez is highly critical of how the team has been run this season, and the prospects of a coup is sending shivers throughout the organization and baseball as a whole.  Any dispute over control of the team could have long-range effects on its success.

Prior to Aurora’s attempt to sweep Bakersfield in Game 3 of the Sovereign League playoffs, Chris Rodriguez held a press conference outside The Chocolate Factory at Yum! Field to address rumors regarding his ownership of the Borealis.

“First, I’d like to start out expressing my sheer disappointment over how the team has been handled this season.  Falling short of last season’s record is highly upsetting and the finger can squarely be pointed only one place.”  And with that, Rodriguez pointed in a westerly direction.

“There have been moves which have stunted our organization’s growth.  These moves have undone the long, hard planning I have undertaken in my four years at the helm of the Aurora Borealis.  The loss of top-notch prospects such as Stephen Longchamps and major league talent like Kuemon Kiyomizu is absolutely scandalous.  Attendance is down for the wtopham_pacbellfirst time in years!”  With that, Rodriguez moved his hands from a pointing for emphasis motion to hands held outward in a sense of shock.  “The loss of young arms Bradley and García clearly is due to mismanagement.  They were worked too hard.  Our loss in the playoffs will be because of this poor decision-making.

“Today I am here to tell you that this despicable decay of my franchise is about to come to an end.  I stand before you to outline a plan; my plan for getting the Borealis back on track.  Despite public belief after the March 28th announcement that the Aurora Borealis have been sold to Mikey Topham, the reality is that I possess a 25% interest in the team.”  The assembled press murmured loudly in shock, rapidly shuffling with their phones, quickly placing calls and sending abbreviated typed text messages to their news outlets.  Some called out questions that were lost amongst all the noise.

“It is my goal to have taken over complete control of the franchise before the first pitch on Opening Day 2012.  I plan on using any and all legal actions if needed against Mikey and his little ‘Boy Wonderful’,” saying that last part with an ugly sneer on his face, “preventing them from making any transactions during the offseason without my consent.  I will burst their bubble right here: They want to let Steve Williamson go?  No chance.  He will stay.  They are looking to move Aaron Turner, a good Borealii.  Over my dead body!”  Gesticulating harder with each point of emphasis, Rodriguez was almost frothing at the mouth.  “That no good Pexego?  Gone.  What good is he doing us now?”

The crowd of reporters stopped their texting, their calls, their scribbling in tiny notebooks and instead looked at each other in stunned silence, jaws hung in disbelief.  “I will not at this time address how I came to own 25% of the club.  The simple fact is that I do, and Golden Entertainment will sell to me.  I guarantee it.”

The Luis Mora Experiment
Written by Freddy Fitzsimmons

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Luis MoraThe London Underground is one of the lowest payroll teams in the Planetary Extreme Baseball Alliance.  With this come some unique circumstances and challenges.  Looking back on the current season is a perfect example.  “Working through free agency last year was quite a chore,” said London GM Scott Miller.  “Due to budget constraints, we were unable to offer any multiyear contracts to any free agent pitchers.”  Word in the London front office was that pitchers such as Kirby Gibson and Jon Mitchell were high on the Underground wish list, but due to the money constraints, they were unable to offer competitive contracts.  Anastasio Molina and Anthony Cox had both been anchors to London’s surprise playoff run of 2010, but Molina was coming off a devastating injury and Cox declined his player option and became too expensive to sign in free agency.  This chain of events led the team to looking at bullpen mainstay Luis Mora.

“With free agency not being an option, we had to look at some things within the organization,” declared Miller.  “We had multiple meetings with Sergio Manetti and Del Carley about what we could do to bolster the starting rotation.”

“Del was actually the one that suggested Luis,” explained Manetti.  “With his repertoire of pitches, we felt he could do it.  It was just a matter of if we could stretch him out far enough to get 100 or so pitches out of him every five days.”

Things looked very promising early on.  Luis made four starts in April, logging 27 innings.  During this stretch, he posted a 1.67 ERA to go along with 4 BB and 18 K.  The one thing that sticks out about these numbers like a sore thumb is Mora’s K/9 for the month.  That total isn’t anything to sneeze at, but we have to look at the type of pitcher we are talking about here.  Luis Mora the reliever is lights-out nasty.  In 2010, he posted a K/9 of 12.26.  That’s over double what he accomplished in April.
