In a tight contest at Ballpark of Sidney, the Waimalu Nene edged the Waikiki Coconuts by the score of 7-6. Waimalu center fielder Kuniyoshi Hirayama, who blasted 1 home run, was a key contributor. Patrick Smith snagged the win in relief. In 4.2 innings, the left-hander allowed 1 run on 2 hits. He's now 1-0 on the season. The win takes Waimalu to 5-5.

Waimalu used the timely hitting of Robert Gökalp to seize the win. The designated hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Nene on top, 7-6. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"We'll enjoy this win," said Gökalp. "But there's more we hope to accomplish."
