Bitters Use Late-Game Magic to Beat Taniwha, 6-3
|
The Melbourne Bitters topped the Tauranga Taniwha, 6-3, in Intercontinental Baseball Coalition action at Victoria Field. The standout performance belonged to Melbourne pitcher and Greenwood, Indiana, native Dave Hartman. The win puts Melbourne at 28-12 this season.
The game was at a stalemate until catcher Gerardo Moreno came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Tauranga pitcher Oscar Buyse, he hit a first pitch fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Melbourne on top, 4-3.
Moreno said his wife shared good advice with him before the game. "She said, 'Don't allow this game to make you mad.' When I thought about it, I realized this is just a game. I was able to relax at the plate."
