The Clifton Dons powered past the hometown Mansfield Mohicans, 3-2, in the opener of the Championship at Sprinters Ballpark today. Clifton starting pitcher José López threw 6.2 innings of 4-hit ball, to lead the charge. The Dons now lead the series 1-0.

Had Manuel Chávez not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Chávez hit a 2-run double. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Dons.

"This team is championship material," López told BNN reporters after the game. "I can see it when I look around the clubhouse. We've still got a long way to go, but I know this team."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Sprinters Ballpark in Mansfield.
