Utrecht Breaks Through for First Win in NAFTA Trophy; Now Trails 3-1
|
Andrés Martínez was not about to watch an opponent celebrate a championship on his home field.
The right-hander pitched the Utrecht Scholars to victory at Utrecht Park today, staving off the Mexicali Shmoes, who remain one game away from a title. Martínez threw 7.0 innings allowing 2 runs. The win cuts the series deficit for the Scholars to 3-1 in the best-of-7 series.
Utrecht grabbed control in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and the bases loaded, Yoshihiro Kaneko delivered a grand slam home run, to make it 5-1 in favor of the Scholars.
Shmoes manager Hidehira Ine did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the NAFTA Trophy."
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Utrecht Park in Utrecht.
