Dons Drop Anchormen, 3-2, with Late Score
|
Anchormen Stadium was the site of an exciting ballgame between the Clifton Dons and Newport News Anchormen.
The Clifton Dons took Newport News pitcher Mark Stanford's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Anchormen Stadium. The final score had Clifton getting past the Anchormen, 3-2. Stanford went 7 innings and allowed 2 runs, striking out 11. Guillermo López, 1-0, earned the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.1 innings.
Clifton used a clutch hit from Shinzo Kakuta to get the win. The pinch hitter drilled a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Dons ahead, 3-2. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
"Against this team here, fangs out late in the game, it's nice to beat them," said Clifton skipper Ken Hooper.
Clifton is now 15-17.
