Purple Haze Top Montlake Malamutes, 6-5
|
The Northwestern Purple Haze weathered a fine game by Washington first baseman Gabriel Mitchell to upend the Montlake Malamutes, 6-5, at Washington Grounds. Mitchell was 2 for 3 with 2 home runs. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. Northwestern reliever Kevin Phillips picked up the win, raising his record to 1-0. Arvid Verwest was tagged with the loss. Orlando López recorded the save for Northwestern, his 5th of the season.
Northwestern used the timely hitting of Deron Lawson to seize the win. The third baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Purple Haze on top, 6-5. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Nice win for us," said Lawson. "Now we'll go after the next one."
Northwestern has now won 3 straight, while the Montlake Malamutes have lost 3 in a row.
