Time's Up: Fernández to Retire Saturday, October 22nd , 2039 His Merida Adelantados teammates were not terribly surprised when Jesús Fernández announced his retirement today. In a low-key affair, Fernández explained his rationale. "My aches and pains have caught up with me. They don't seem to go away like they used to when I was a kid," he said. "I'm spending more and more time in the trainer's room and less and less time preparing for my next game. I've come to a realization that I've done what I can in this game and spending more time playing baseball is just stealing from my future self." When asked, the team manager noted "Jesús has always been an honest man and when he says he's done, well, he's done." Fernández has a career .260 average with 1176 hits, including 155 doubles, 8 triples and 183 homers, collected 618 RBIs, scored 540 runs and compiled a .323 OBP. |
