Sailors, Buccaneers Play 16 to Settle Game 1, Sarasota HS Now Leads Series 1-0

The Sarasota HS Sailors and the Barbe HS Buccaneers needed 16 innings to settle Game 1, with the Sailors finally taking the 4-1 victory at Ballpark of Barbe HS. Excelling in the win was Sarasota HS starting pitcher Samuel Johnston, who threw 6.1 innings allowing 1 runs. The Sailors and Buccaneers are playing a best-of-7 series.

Sarasota HS needed the clutch hitting of Ricky Curry to notch the win. The designated hitter hammered a solo home run in the top of the 16th inning to put the Sailors on top, 2-1. For the game, Curry had 1 home run and 2 singles in 7 at-bats.

"I hate extra innings," Sarasota HS manager Pancho Martínez said. "It makes everyone more tired, wears out the bullpen, wears out the fans. Even winning doesn't make me feel good about it."
