Kenai Traders manager Tony Thompson knew it was a gamble to give the start to a rookie. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a hostile crowd, 21-year-old left-hander Ricardo Moreno silenced the host Cold Bay Eleven at Thunderclouds Ballpark today. The Traders shut out the Eleven by a final score of 1-0, to give the Traders a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-5 Divisional.

Kenai used the timely hitting of Calvin Brem to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Traders on top, 1-0. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.

"It'd be nice to win by four or five runs," Brem said, "instead of holding our breath the whole game."

The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Thunderclouds Ballpark in Dillingham.
