Méndez Super -- No-Hits Boone HS
Wednesday, April 4th , 2040
Horizon HS Huskies starter Manny Méndez said he was standing behind the mound when the scoreboard caught his eye, confirming what he already knew: He was one out from a no-hitter. For a couple of seconds, he didn't move.
"I took a breath and told myself 'This is the last one,'" Méndez recalled.
The right-hander collected himself, got the final out, and finished one of the greatest performances of his career.
The Horizon HS right-hander no-hit the Boone HS Matadors 1-0 at Boone Ballpark, finishing with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts, facing only 30 batters.
"I knew for a while it was a no-hitter," Méndez admitted later. "But I really didn't worry about it until the last out. I thought I just wanted to win the game, and then I realized I wanted the no-hitter, too."
In 7 starts this year Méndez has posted 1 win while suffering no losses. He has pitched 39.2 innings, allowed 30 hits, struck out 28 and has a 2.04 ERA.
